Asthma

Asthma shouldn’t be a reason for avoiding or quitting exercise. It’s a chronic disease of respiratory system and main characteristic is dyspnea. Due to temporary stenosis of the tubes, through which entry and exit of air that take place inside the lungs, we observe dyspnea. Other symptoms that may exist, is dizziness, pain, tightening in the chest or cough during activities. This happens because exercise forces us to inhale deeper, so we fill our lungs with colder and drier air from the mouth. Therefore, we breathe differently than before, inhaling from nose, which filters and purifies the air we take increasing its’ moisture.

The explanation of the causality is not simple and scientists believe that many factors are responsible.

Factors causing Asthma

  • Allergies. It’s very often in young people. Substances that cause allergy are pollen from plants and trees, household dust (parasites that live in the dust), mould, hair, scale, feathers, medicine and food like milk products, eggs, chocolate, corn, walnuts, fish and oysters.
  • Infections of respiratory system like flu, common cold, sinusitis, etc.
  • Psychological factors, like intense joy or sadness
  • Environmental factors, like inhaling smoke, contaminated atmospheric air
  • Professional factors. People at their work may inhale dust, chemicals, gazes, farina, etc.

Exercise can help us control better asthma symptoms. Very often though exercise is the only reason that asthma symptoms are rising, and then we are talking about exercise-based asthma. Athletes are suffering more than others. The most important is to diagnose this disease, evaluate the gravity with the help of an expert doctor and manage it with the correct prescription.
