Obesity

Research across the globe shows that obesity is man’s most common disease nowadays. It is considered a multifactorial disease and appears for childhood. Also, obesity is one of the most serious predisposing factors for the emergence of ischemic disease of myocardium, sudden death, hypertension, diabetes and others.
Also, there has been observed cardiac disorders, like increase of circulating blood volume, cardiac output, diastolic pressure of left ventricle and cardiac work.

Common causes of Obesity

The most common causes are overeating, junk food, and lack of physical activity. Rarely, the causes are pathological, for example affections of endocrine gland, reception of specific medication, etc. That which characterizes obesity is the increase of size and number of fat cells. The fact that we have access everywhere and anytime in fast food and generally tasty food with lots of fat, makes the disease pandemic.

Research has shown that obese people weren’t consuming more food than people with normal weight, but on the contrary they had very low energy consumption. Also, an interesting study showed that obese people during their movement, they used the stairs less than elevators.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

It is very important to underline the importance of Body Mass Index (BMI), for the evaluation of people who have problems with their weight. It’s a simple and reliable medical term for body fat, that we can use and determine weight categories that may recognize related health problems, so we could prevent and treat them. This term is based on an equation that relates individual’s body weight with height, if our weight is healthy based on our height.

BMI = weight (kg) / height2 (m)

Weight BMI Category
underweight < 18.5
Normal 18.5-24.9
overweight 25-29.9
obesity 30.0-34.9 Ι
35.0-39.9 ΙΙ
Extreme obesity > 40 ΙΙΙ

The reduction of body fat stored, is based on the negative balance that will have to be between the food reception and consumption. To treat obesity effectively, it’s very important to exercise regularly. Exercise leads to energy consumption and at the same point with the appropriate diet we lose weight. It’s known that only with diet the reduction of body weight is achieved due to fat and muscle mass loss.

On the contrary, with exercise we can preserve muscle mass, while we lose a great amount of fat. Also, with regular exercise the obese individual’s ability for physical task is increased, while the danger of cardiovascular disease emergence is reduced. Moreover, the overload on the joints and muscles is reduced, the strength increases, psychological state, mood and confidence are improved.
